The Carnival of Cegni is one of the most authentic folk celebrations in the province of Pavia. This event takes place twice a year in the picturesque village of Cegni, a hamlet of the municipality of Santa Margherita di Staffora. The first edition occurs during the traditional Carnival period, while the second, known as the White Carnival, is celebrated on August 16.
The Winter Carnival
In 2025, the Winter Carnival of Cegni will take place on March 1 and 2. As per tradition, the festivities will begin with a gathering at the house of the Povra Dona, from where the masked procession will set off, passing through the courtyards of the village. The parade will be enlivened by the typical music and dances of the Quattro Province (Four Provinces), skillfully performed by local musicians.
One of the most awaited moments is the evocative “Dance of the Poor Woman”, followed by the “Dinner of the Ugly Man and the Poor Woman” at the Festival Hall. This dinner offers a unique opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the festive atmosphere and savor local specialties.
Origins and Meaning
The roots of the Carnival of Cegni go back to ancient times, and its exact origins remain uncertain. Some scholars associate it with pagan fertility rites for the land, while others believe it dates back to the Middle Ages, symbolizing the union between the “Ugly Man” and the “Poor Woman”.
Regardless of its origin, this festival remains a precious cultural heritage, passed down from generation to generation, preserving local traditions and keeping them alive.
A Night of Celebration
The Carnival of Cegni concludes with a grand ball that lasts until late at night, bringing together all participants in an atmosphere of music and fun. Taking part in this celebration means discovering a corner of history, folklore, and conviviality, experiencing an authentic and engaging tradition.
