There are places in the Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese where travelling just a few kilometres away from the main valley road is enough to find yourself in a completely different landscape. The Tibetan bridge and the caves of San Ponzo <\/strong>are one of them. Between San Ponzo Semola, Guardamonte and the slopes of Monte Vallassa, a hiking route winds through chestnut woods, sandstone cliffs, religious history, views over the Staffora Valley and, since 2026, the thrill of crossing a bridge suspended high above the ground. <\/p>\n

It is one of the most distinctive hikes in the Oltrep\u00f2 because, within just a few kilometres, you can move from an ancient stone village to a place associated with a hermit, before climbing towards the ridge and reaching the new suspended bridge connecting the territories of Ponte Nizza and Cecima.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Tibetan Bridge and the Caves of San Ponzo: Where the Hike Begins<\/h2><\/h2><\/div>

The most scenic starting point for reaching the Tibetan bridge and the caves of San Ponzo is San Ponzo Semola<\/strong>, a small hamlet of Ponte Nizza surrounded by the Staffora Valley.<\/p>\n

From here, the trail gradually climbs through the woodland towards the caves and then continues towards Guardamonte. According to official information from the Municipality of Ponte Nizza, San Ponzo Semola lies at around 308 metres above sea level<\/strong>, while the caves are reached after approximately 2.5 kilometres<\/strong>, at an altitude of about 550 metres.<\/strong> Continuing uphill, hikers reach Guardamonte after around 4.4 kilometres, at an elevation of 685 metres.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The route therefore involves a fairly steady climb, although there are no extreme gradients along the main trail. Its real appeal lies in the variety of landscapes encountered along the way: meadows and small rural settlements gradually give way to woodland and, eventually, the rocky formations of Guardamonte. <\/p>\n<\/div>

The Caves of San Ponzo Hidden in the Woods<\/h2><\/div>

The first major surprise along the route is the caves of San Ponzo<\/strong>, surrounded by greenery and connected for centuries with local religious tradition.<\/p>\n

The cavities open directly into the rock in a secluded setting, almost completely hidden by vegetation. According to tradition, the site is linked to Saint Ponzo, who is believed to have chosen these mountains as a place of hermitage. Even today, the area retains a strong spiritual atmosphere and remains both a destination for pilgrims and a popular hiking spot. <\/p>\n

The caves and the ancient village of San Ponzo are also listed by the FAI, the Italian National Trust, among the places of cultural interest in the area.<\/p>\n

A Place Where Nature and Legend Meet<\/h3>\n

Reaching the caves of San Ponzo<\/strong> on foot helps visitors understand why this place has inspired stories and local traditions for centuries.<\/p>\n

Water filtering through the rock has taken on a particular significance within local religious devotion, and the site continues to attract visitors partly because of this spiritual dimension.<\/p>\n

However, the caves are not interesting from a religious perspective alone. The entire Guardamonte and Monte Vallassa area features rocky outcrops and geological formations that also make the hike particularly appealing from a naturalistic point of view. <\/p>\n<\/div>

From San Ponzo to Guardamonte Through the Woods<\/h2><\/div>

After passing the caves, the route towards Guardamonte continues to gain altitude gradually.<\/p>\n

This is probably the section that most strongly gives hikers the feeling of being deep in the Apennines, despite the area being relatively close to the towns of the Staffora Valley.<\/p>\n

Woodlands alternate with panoramic openings and rocky outcrops, while the landscape gradually becomes increasingly wild and rugged.<\/p>\n

Guardamonte lies within the Monte Vallassa area, a mountain reaching approximately 756 metres above sea level<\/strong> and separating the Staffora Valley from the nearby Curone Valley. It is also an especially interesting area thanks to the distinctive Balze di Guardamonte rock formations and the presence of important archaeological remains. <\/p>\n<\/div>

The New Tibetan Bridge in the Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese<\/h2><\/div>

The biggest new feature of the route arrived in 2026 with the opening of the new Tibetan bridge<\/strong> in the Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese, more accurately referred to by local authorities as a suspension bridge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The structure was officially inaugurated on 16 May 2026<\/strong> and added a much more adventurous element to the hiking network connecting Cecima, Guardamonte and Ponte Nizza.<\/p>\n

The bridge crosses a particularly scenic wooded area and allows visitors to admire the surrounding landscape from a completely different perspective compared with traditional hiking trails.<\/p>\n

It is therefore not simply an attraction in its own right. It can become one of the most spectacular highlights of a longer hike exploring this part of the Upper Oltrep\u00f2.<\/p>\n

How to Reach the Suspension Bridge<\/h3>\n

Those wishing to reach the Guardamonte suspension bridge <\/strong>directly can also start from the Cecima side.<\/p>\n

The Municipality of Ponte Nizza identifies the shortest access route as the one starting from Serra del Monte<\/strong>, continuing towards C\u00e0 del Monte and then following signs for the CAI 194 and CAI 193 hiking trails.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Those starting from San Ponzo, on the other hand, can create a more complete hiking itinerary by linking the caves, Guardamonte and the bridge area, turning the day into a proper trek through one of the wildest parts of the Staffora Valley.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Crossing the Bridge: Rules You Need to Know<\/h2><\/div>

The Tibetan bridge in the Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese<\/strong> is freely accessible as part of the local hiking network, but crossing it is subject to specific safety regulations.<\/p>\n

For the 2026 season, the Municipality established that the bridge may only be used from sunrise to sunset<\/strong>, with a maximum of 10 people <\/strong>allowed on the bridge at the same time.<\/p>\n

Appropriate hiking footwear is compulsory. Access is prohibited in bad weather, and bicycles and animals are not allowed on the structure. For 2026, the bridge is expected to remain open until October. <\/p>\n

Before setting off, it is therefore always advisable to check the latest announcements from the municipalities concerned, especially after periods of heavy rain or adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>

San Ponzo Semola Is Worth a Stop<\/h2><\/div>

A hike to the Tibetan bridge and the caves of San Ponzo<\/strong> should not begin without spending a few minutes exploring the small village of San Ponzo Semola.<\/p>\n

Its stone houses, courtyards and parish church reveal a very different side of the Oltrep\u00f2 compared with the vineyard-covered hills closer to the plains.<\/p>\n

San Ponzo has been documented since at least the Middle Ages. In 943, the village, together with nearby Cecima, was donated by Kings Hugh and Lothair to the Bishop of Pavia. In the following centuries, it remained closely connected with the feudal history of this part of the Apennines. <\/p>\n

It is precisely this combination of history, religion and landscape that makes starting from the village far more fascinating than simply approaching the hiking trail directly.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Why This Is One of the Most Distinctive Hikes in the Oltrep\u00f2<\/h2><\/div>

Calling it simply a walk would not really do it justice.<\/p>\n

The Tibetan bridge and the caves of San Ponzo<\/strong> bring together almost every side of the mountainous Oltrep\u00f2 within a single itinerary: a medieval village, religious tradition, woodland, geology, panoramic views across the Staffora Valley and, now, the excitement of walking suspended between two hillsides.<\/p>\n

You do not need to travel to the Alps to find a trail capable of offering a genuine sense of adventure. In San Ponzo, all you have to do is leave the car behind, enter the woods and start climbing. <\/p>\n

Just a few kilometres later, the Oltrep\u00f2 reveals a completely different
