There are places in Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese that invite you to walk while taking in the landscape. Others are worth stopping in from time to time to look up towards the trees and the sky.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

This is the spirit behind the birdwatching trail<\/strong> in the Ponte Nizza area, an itinerary connecting the San Ponzo ponds <\/strong>with the Hermitage of Sant\u2019Alberto di Butrio,<\/strong> crossing some of the most environmentally interesting landscapes in this part of the Staffora Valley.<\/p>\n

It is a relatively short yet surprisingly varied route, designed not only for birdwatching enthusiasts. Along the way, woodland, clearings, open spaces and panoramic viewpoints alternate, while information panels and educational installations help visitors understand features of the landscape that we often pass without noticing. The project itself describes the trail, quite fittingly, as a kind of \u201cnaturalistic summary\u201d of this part of Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/div>

331 bird species recorded in Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese<\/h2><\/div>

One of the most striking figures concerns the remarkable variety of birdlife found across the area.<\/p>\n

According to data published by the Birdwatching in Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese<\/strong> project, 331 bird species have been recorded over time across Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese as a whole.<\/strong> Of these, around 130 have been sighted within the boundaries of the Municipality of Ponte Nizza<\/strong>, where the trail is located. <\/p>\n

These figures should be interpreted correctly: they do not, of course, mean that all these species are present at the same time or can be seen during a single excursion. Sightings depend on the season, the habitats crossed, migratory movements and, not least, a good deal of patience. <\/p>\n

And this is perhaps precisely what makes birdwatching so fascinating: the trail remains the same, but what you can observe changes throughout the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n<\/div>

From San Ponzo to the Hermitage of Sant\u2019Alberto di Butrio<\/h2><\/div>

The main route begins near the so-called San Ponzo ponds<\/strong>, in the municipality of Ponte Nizza, and gradually climbs towards Sant\u2019Alberto di Butrio.<\/p>\n

According to the official map, the route passes through or alongside the areas of Vignola, Monte Nocelle and Pian del Lago<\/strong>, identified by the project as some of the most environmentally significant locations along the trail. The final destination is the Hermitage of Sant\u2019Alberto di Butrio, at an altitude of approximately 675 metres. <\/p>\n

Depending on the route and variant followed, the official map indicates a total distance of around 6.5\u20136.9 kilometres<\/strong> and an overall elevation gain of approximately 396 metres<\/strong>. The trail starts at roughly 279 metres above sea level and rises to more than 600 metres in its latter stages. <\/p>\n

It is therefore not simply a flat walk: some sections feature significant gradients, and the technical documentation distinguishes between stretches of varying hiking difficulty. Appropriate footwear is recommended, along with checking the official route map before setting out. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Sixteen points to help you read the landscape<\/strong><\/span><\/h2><\/h2><\/div>

One of the most interesting features of the itinerary is the presence of 16 information panels <\/strong>positioned along the trail.<\/p>\n

The panels explain the different environments encountered and the birdlife typically associated with each area, while others explore the territory\u2019s historical and cultural heritage. At the main points of interest there are also display boards showing the trail map<\/strong>, as well as rest areas equipped with benches and picnic tables. <\/p>\n

The result is a trail that does not simply invite visitors to walk through it, but encourages them to observe the surrounding environment more carefully.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Vignola, Pian del Lago and Monte Nocelle: the natural heart of the trail<\/strong><\/span><\/h2><\/h2><\/div>

Among the areas highlighted by the project are Vignola, Pian del Lago and Monte Nocelle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is precisely the variety of environments crossed by the trail that makes it particularly interesting for wildlife observation. The transition between wooded areas and more open spaces creates different habitats within a relatively short distance.<\/p>\n

This is also where the itinerary takes on a significance that goes beyond birdwatching. In just a few kilometres, it offers a glimpse of some of the most characteristic features of the Upper Oltrep\u00f2: woodland, Apennine slopes, small rural settlements and historic paths gradually leading towards Sant\u2019Alberto. <\/p>\n<\/div>

A route connected to the Greenway and CAI hiking trails<\/h2><\/div>

The trail is not isolated from the wider hiking network of the Staffora Valley.<\/p>\n

The project highlights the possibility of connecting it with the Voghera\u2013Varzi Greenway <\/strong>and several CAI hiking trails in the surrounding area, allowing visitors to create longer itineraries for a full day outdoors.<\/p>\n

San Ponzo itself is also an interesting destination. The small stone village is connected to the well-known San Ponzo Caves<\/strong>, which can be reached along a trail through chestnut woodland. VisitPavia also identifies the area as one of the most interesting fossil sites in Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese. <\/p>\n

At the opposite end of the route lies one of the most symbolic sites of the Upper Oltrep\u00f2: the Hermitage of Sant\u2019Alberto di Butrio<\/strong>, surrounded by woodland above the Val di Nizza.<\/p>\n

The excursion therefore combines nature, landscape and historical and religious heritage<\/strong> within a single itinerary.<\/p>\n<\/div>

When to go birdwatching in Oltrep\u00f2<\/h2><\/div>

There is no single best season for birdwatching.<\/p>\n

Spring and migration periods can offer a greater variety of species, while at other times of the year both the species present, wildlife behaviour and visibility within the woods change. The best approach is therefore to consider the trail as a route worth rediscovering at different times of the year. <\/p>\n

Very little is needed to enjoy it properly: binoculars, suitable footwear, discreet clothing and, above all, silence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Birdwatching works almost in the opposite way to hurried tourism: the more slowly you move, the greater your chances of noticing the wildlife all around you.<\/p>\n<\/div>

A different way to discover Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese<\/h2><\/div>

Oltrep\u00f2 is often associated with its vineyards, villages, castles and food. But there is also another side to the area, one best discovered in silence. <\/p>\n

The trail between San Ponzo and Sant\u2019Alberto di Butrio <\/strong>is a particularly interesting example: less than seven kilometres crossing a range of different environments and revealing the natural richness of the Staffora Valley.<\/p>\n

The figure of 331 bird species recorded over time in Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese<\/strong> also helps illustrate just how significant this area can be from a wildlife perspective.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, discovering a different side of Oltrep\u00f2 does not require travelling very far.<\/p>\n

You simply need to walk more slowly and look
